With a crazy week of university football behind us, this weekend has the makings of some good November playoff football. The Uteck Bowl and The Mitchell Bowl will be played on Saturday, featuring the champion teams from each of the 4 divisions that make up USports.
The Uteck Bowl
#2 Western Mustangs at #7 Acadia Axemen
The Acadia Axemen are coming off an exciting double overtime win in the Loney Bowl, a game that many thought would not be played due to SMU eligibility issues, until the AUS announced it would continue and a champion would be crowned on Tuesday night. They will be up against a powerful and dominant Western Mustangs team that is resting up after a Madden-like performance against Laurier in the Yates Cup. The Mustangs managed to put up 75 points in that game while getting strong contributions from offence, defence and special teams. This will definitely be a tough game for Acadia, based on the fact that they only get 5 days rest due to the AUS championship being played on Tuesday. I can’t see Acadia being able to keep up with the horses that Western has. Expect to see Western get up early and stay on top in dominating fashion. The Stangs should coast through this one.
Prediction: 65-14 Western
#1 Laval Rouge et Or at #4 Calgary Dinos
Similar to Acadia, Calgary is running high with emotions right now coming off a last second win in The Hardy Cup over UBC. The game ended with kicker Niko Difonte showing off a rocket of a leg, hitting a 59-yard field goal with time expiring. The players rushed the field at McMahon Stadium to celebrate with the hero of the game. The Rouge et Or of Laval also won in a close game against RSEQ rival Montreal. The game was a back and forth battle that ended up with Laval on top 25-22. Laval’s defence managed to come up with 5 sacks and 2 turnovers in that game. 2 of the top offences in the country will be up against won another this Saturday. I think whoever turns the ball over the least has the best shot to take this one. Although, Laval is undefeated in both the Uteck and Mitchell bowl when they’ve been there, and 2-0 all-time against Calgary in the National Semi-Finals. Look for this experience in big games to help give Laval in edge in this one.
Prediction: 35-22 Laval
